“I’ve just heard
the most amazing thing…
and here I am tantalizing you.”
The Great Gatsby
One of the most talked about movies this year is the new interpretation of an American classic, The Great Gatsby. F. Scott Fitzgerald captures the rambunctious world of the 1920’s with his unique collection of characters.Nick Carraway narrates the tale of a Midwestern man moving to the bustling city of New York after World War I. Carraway meets an interesting group of men and women through the connections of his cousin Daisy and her husband, Tom, while quickly gathering an understanding of the distinctly different upper and lower classes. Whispers among the proper citizens tell of a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby who is known for throwing vulgar, over the top parties. After attending one of these legendary gatherings, Nick is quickly sucked into a world of convoluted personal connections which ends in unexpected tragedy, leaving him to contemplate what the true meaning of “The American Dream” stands for and how quickly it can end.
In the May, Leonardo Dicaprio and Carey Mulligan bring these characters to life. The mysterious world of Jay Gatsby will once again be brought to audiences of the big screen with the help of director/producer Baz Luhrmann. After an initial release delay, everyone is a buzz with delight over this great American classic.
The 1920’s was a boisterous time around the world. After the Great War, people were looking to celebrate life and new found wealth. Trends began pushing more toward modern, new inspirations rather than looking to back to the past. Young women rebelled against traditionally acceptable dresses and hair styles leading to the introduction of the “bob” hairstyle and flapper personalities. New technologies and new styles marked the start of a new culture.
